If you were someone's guest for the weekend, or were the beneficiary of a magnanimous act, only you can properly thank your benefactor. And in such instances, you should. But sometimes a person gets overwhelmed, or tongue-tied, or they have a sore wrist or c'mon!... they've been perfect all their lives but just this once it would be a huge relief not to write all those looming, overdue, procrastinated, neglected notes! Let's face it - having to write 50 or 100 letters of thanks can strain anyone's sincerity (and sanity).
